Why the Institute
Too often, students are asked to find public-service experience on their own while schools and host organizations are left to manage the process with limited capacity.
Houston Civic Institute creates the missing bridge: a structured pathway from student interest to readiness, real work, professional feedback, and future placement.
The Institute is more than a listing board. It helps design opportunities, prepare students, coordinate the experience, and document outcomes that schools and hosts can actually use.
Cohort One tests a model designed to support students while reducing the coordination burden on universities and host organizations.
The fellow journey

The operating layer
The long-term value is not simply finding open internships. It is making high-quality student experiences easier to create, manage, and evaluate.
Cohort One is the first controlled pilot. What we learn will shape future spring, summer, and fall cohorts.
Student intake and profiles: interests, experience, availability, goals, and readiness.
Opportunity design: turn real host needs into structured assignments and internship scopes.
Matching and coordination: identify fit, organize conversations, and track decisions.
Orientation and onboarding: set expectations before work begins.
Weekly learning system: assignments, submissions, check-ins, feedback, and progress tracking in one private community.
Host support: templates, check-in prompts, issue escalation, and supervisor feedback.
Outcome documentation: participation records, work products, reflections, and portfolio-ready storytelling.
Cohort One timeline
Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central Time.
Selected fellows receive their orientation choice, kickoff details, and next steps by email.
11:00 a.m. Friday or 5:30 p.m. Monday. Selected fellows attend one 45-minute session.
Goals, expectations, the first approved assignment, and access to the private cohort community.
Headshots, resume support, introduction videos, and an Inside the Work dinner focused on government and politics.
A small-table conversation about academic pathways, professional preparation, and moving from campus into civic work.
An Inside the Work conversation about careers, leadership, and relationships across mission-driven organizations.
Approved community-facing work with assignments, learning, and outcomes documented.
Design a nonpartisan campus outreach campaign, present it in a class, and document the presentation for the fellow's portfolio.
Present the work, explain the learning, and identify the next professional step.
Beyond Cohort One
Fellows who complete the program and demonstrate readiness may be considered for future internships and project opportunities. Hosts can bring the Institute a real need and receive help shaping it into a strong student experience.
